What is mindfulness?
Simply, mindfulness is awareness. We might think that we are aware of ourselves, our surroundings, and other people, but many of us are so busy, and our thoughts so scattered, that we are operating on auto-pilot. Before we know it, our stress levels are through the roof, work and relationships have become difficult, and our sense of wellbeing declines.
Mindfulness is like a muscle. By learning and practicing mindfulness, we increase our ability to be aware more often. We deepen our awareness of our thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and circumstances as they are in the here and now. Mindfulness practice provides us with an opportunity to stop, breathe and rest. It enables us to see more clearly what is contributing to our suffering, and identify how we might be able to help ourselves.
Meditation is one way to strengthen your mindfulness muscle, but it’s not the only way. There are a variety of practices to choose from, based on your preference, schedule and lifestyle.
